3:1 Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;
Paul is asking us once again to very, very carefully consider the evidence the dual role that Yeshua/Jesus is claiming; He is bothe the Perfect Sacrifice as well as the Perfect High Priest. Are you a partaker? μέτοχος métochos, met’-okh-os; participant, an associate:—a fellow, in a work, office, dignity. Why would I need a High Priest? So many of the brick-n-mortar church attendees claim the Old Testament no longer applies. If that were so, WHY would I need a High Priest? This will be explained .. in detail.. later in this letter.
3:2 Who was faithful to him (YHVH) that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house.
This is a fulfilment of the promise, or covenant, of Deuteronomy 18:18-19 “I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.”
The terminology used in Deuteronomy are a combination of idioms… “to be established, be confirmed” “to cause to stand, set, station, establish” “strengthen, succeed” would have been combined with ‘a prophet’ meaning “one who, as actuated buy a divine afflatus, or spirit, to either rebuke the conduct of kings, nations or people or to predict future events”
- John 12:48-49 “He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.”
We can see from these ‘red letter’ words of Yeshua that the penalty for disobedience to YHVH in the modern world is the exact same as when the Angels disobeyed.
- John 3:18 “He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”
- Acts 3:20-23 “And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you: Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began. For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you. And it shall come to pass, that every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall be destroyed from among the people.”
3:3 For this man was counted worthy* of more glory** than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house# hath more honour than the house.
*ἀξιόω axióō, ax-ee-o’-o; from G514; to deem entitled or fit:
**in the Targum and Talmud שְׁכִינָה, Shekinah or Shechinah by which God
made manifest to men his presence and power on earth.
#οἶκος oîkos, oy’-kos; a dwelling (more or less extensive, literal or figurative); by implication, a family
Read it again with the depth of the writers understanding…. ” This Messiah Yeshua is deemed entitled or fit, by God,
and made manifest to men his presence and power on earth, over that of Moses because he created an (eternal) family.
Paul is trying to convey a message to the people of his generation. These people had become so ingrained to the power and control of the Pharisees that they had missed the Creator of both the ‘man of Moses’ and the “law of Moses”.
3:4 For every house (family) is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God.
- Deuteronomy 4:7 “For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them, as the Lord our God is in all things that we call upon him for?”
- Colossians 1:16 “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:”
- Exodus 3:14 “And God said unto Moses, I Am That I Am: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I Am hath sent me unto you.”
God obliged and gave Moses a name: a name that denoted God’s characteristics, and that name was “ehyeh asher ehyeh.” [to bring into existence all that exists] God gave us that “name” for just this reason, His name, his character, is not to be compared with anything, or anyone, else.
3:5 And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after;
Here we see Paul explaining that Moses is the type that foreshadows the future Messiah. Lets look at those characteristics. Some state there are hundreds of comparisons… here are ten…
- Humble beginnings… both are raised by their earthly mother and a step-father.
- Both begin their leadership/ministry in the trials of the desert.
- Neither hold any sort of notoriety among the world leaders.
- They both lead God’s people out of bondage.(Num 11:11)
- They both performed signs, wonders and miracles.
- Both held intimate conversations with God: “The LORD would speak to Moses face to face…” (Exodus 33:11).
- Function as the High Priest…They constantly interceded for the people.
- Both recognized as the “King of Israel” one in the physical and the latter in the Spiritual.
- Both fasted for 40 days before bringing the Torah to the people.
- Both will be responsible for ushering in the plagues.
3:6 But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.
- Matthew 23:1-3 “Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples, Saying The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat: All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.“
- Acts 20:32 “And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.”
- Ephesians 1:11 “In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:
It is very evident to the writer of Hebrews that there is an established pattern, or path, to the promise and fulfilment of the Scriptures. Also, that the pattern is for us to understand as a Spiritual Covenant for a Spiritual Israel. Verses seven to eleven detail this fact. There is an immediacy and a permanency to Promise.
3:7 Wherefore as the Holy Ghost saith, Today if ye will hear his voice,
