Matthew 5:5 “Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.”
As a young man I heard this verse explained in a youth group sermon. The leader stated the “Christian” man or woman would not be an aggressive, violent or abusive to others. Okay…… seems legit. Then we got the “turn the other cheek” verse as a follow up.
All I could think was “you’re kidding, right?” This is the perception I was given: that my faith, Christianity, encourages push-overs, weenies, or wimps. I was a fatherless child growing up with my mother and a younger half-sister…. I had enough self-esteem and bullying issues already…. I really didn’t need to add to it.
Again, in my mid-twenties, I heard a minister speak on this verse…. his theme… “meek doesn’t mean weak.” He never actually defined or explained the word ‘meek’, he just kept saying it… “meek doesn’t mean weak”.

When Jesus speaks these words… he is actually quoting Psalm 37:11….
“But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.”
Still at hand is the definition… meek H6035 {Strong’s}
H6035 עָנָו anav (aw-nawv') n-m. עָנָיו
anayv (aw-nawv’) [from H6031]
depressed (figuratively), in mind (gentle) or circumstances (needy, especially saintly).
H6031 עָנָה `anah (aw-naw’) v. to depress. to humble (oneself). to publicly humble another (i.e. chastise). abase self, afflict(-ion, self)
What we see here is the personal decision to humble yourself before YHVH. In the beginning you may see this as an affliction, to say, an unpleasant experience. Humans in general do not like to be inconvenienced, let alone, to think of being deprived of anything in this modern society. Imagine depriving yourself of something…. no internet for a month… you would lose your mind….
But read the sentence with this mindset….
“Blessed are those with the personal decision to humble themselves before YHVH: for they shall inherit the earth.”
Sounds good, eh? Now lets look at that little word “earth”. Based on the pollution, politics and perverts…. the “earth” doesn’t seem like a bonus… until we realize the current earth is cursed [Genesis 3:17] and that a new earth [Rev 21:1] is coming. But the real mind bender…. Genesis 1:8…
“And God called the firmament (earth) Heaven.”
The original design of ‘heaven’ was the ability of man to cohabitate with God. Now read Matthew 5:5…
“Blessed are those with the personal decision to humble themselves before YHVH: for they shall cohabitate with God.”
Read that again… this time out loud!
“Blessed are those with the personal decision to humble themselves before YHVH: for they shall cohabitate with God.”
There are more verses that speak to the meek and the earth. Would this methodology still work… lets see…
Numbers 12:3 (Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.) Now the man Moses was very humble before YHVH, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.
Psalm 76:9 (When God arose to judgment, to save all the meek of the earth.) When God arose to judgment, to save all those with the personal decision to humble themselves before YHVH on the earth.
Meek is not weak, it is very strong! And the outcome is Heavenly!
