Wine in scripture is doctrine. As defined by Webster doctrine is “a stated principle or set of beliefs”. Similar words are teaching, instruction and direction.
Here comes the interesting part …..
Jesus says in John 7:16 that his doctrine is “not mine but His who sent me.” Also, Jesus states plainly in Matthew 5:18 that “not one jot or tittle shall pass from the instructions.” Did you catch that?
Now read this…
Matthew 9:16-17 “No man put a new piece of cloth onto an old garment for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the old garment and the rent is made worse. Neither do men put new wine into old wineskin else the wineskin breaketh, and the wine run out and the wine skins perish but they put new wine into new wine skins and both are preserved.”
Jesus was warning the crowd that day about the Pharisees and their ‘new wine’ and how they were trying to incorporate Rabbinical Halacha and Babylonian Talmud into the church. Jesus was also warning us if the coming apostasy of the Romans and the introduction of polytheism and sungod worship of today.
This why Paul says he teaches the Torah in Romans 3:31 and why John tells the church to seek out the “word they have heard from the beginning”.
