3 O foolish (unintelligent+carelessness) Galatians, who hath bewitched (amazed with false representations) you, that ye should not obey the truth (Torah), before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently (obviously) set forth (written about before), crucified among you?
2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law (salvation by the law), or by the hearing of faith? (the same faith as Noah & Abraham resulting in salvation according to the grace and mercy of YHWH.)
3 Are ye so foolish (unintelligent)? having begun in the Spirit (faith), are ye now made perfect by the flesh? (He preached salvation by faith to these people then taught them the expression of that faith back to YHWH was living according to Torah.)
4 Have ye suffered (to experience a sensation or impression) so many things in vain? if it be yet in vain.
5 He therefore that ministereth (fully supply) to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law (keeping Law of Moses before having faith in YHWH), or by the hearing of faith?
- Romans 10:17 “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
6 Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.
The Pharisees did not believe they had to subjugate themselves to the authority of Yeshua, and as such, they insisted a convert be fully in accordance to the Mosaic Law prior to their claim to salvation. They taught that a person in transition/conversion to the faith was destined to damnation until they were in compliance to all the laws. Paul is teaching that people are saved unto YHWH first and then they learn the laws of YHWH out of their love for him.
7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.
- The official adoption into the House of Israel comes at the moment a person believes the life, death and resurrection of Yeshua as the reparations of the relationship to YHVH.
8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.
Abraham having been called from the Ur of Chaldees which is the heart of Babylon and all the false religions because he alone believed in YHWH became the earthly father of the children of promise. The term “Israelite” does not come into existence until Jacob, Abraham’s grandson, is renamed by God to Israel. Abraham adopts Goyim/Gentiles into his earthly family and it is this that we draw the revelation of our own adoption into the promise.
Genesis 26:4-5 “And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.”
Psalm 1:1-2 “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law (Torah) of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.”
9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.
- Romans 9:7-8 “Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, [natural born] are they all children: but, In Isaac [offspring through Ephraim] shall thy seed be called. That is, They which are the children of the flesh [circumcised], these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise [faith] are counted for the seed.
10 For as many as are of the works of the law (Judaism – those that depend on the law and not on Yeshua for salvation) are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law (Torah) to do them.
11 But that no man is justified (receives salvation) by the law (Torah) in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just (those saved) shall live by faith.
Habakkuk 2:4 “Behold, his soul which is lifted up [the proud] is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.”
To those that believe every word of YHWH to be truth, they will live as such, seeing that the Torah is righteous instructions for a life pleasing to YHWH.
Romans 11:26 “And so all Israel shall be saved (House of Judah & House of Ephraim): as it is written, There shall come out of Sion (mountain of YHWH) the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness (lawless behavior) from Jacob (House of Israel):”) (Deliverer is a combination of Greek words…. G4511 ῥύσις rhusis (rhï ’-sis) n. a flux (of blood). & G4482 ῥέω rheo (rhe’-ō) v. to flow)
Isaiah 59:20 “And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the Lord.”
1 John 3:4 “Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.”)(The transaction here explained is that the blood of Yahshua is delivered (to the altar in the heavenly realm) for our transgressions, so that, we can live out the Torah which is the will of YHWH.
Psalm 32:1 “Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered”
Ezekiel 18:20-22 “The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him. But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die. All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live.
We have to see here that the person is justified by their repentance to lawlessness and their faith in YHWH to show them grace and mercy. Righteousness is apart from works in both OT & NT.
Romans 4:9-12 Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness. How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision. And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also. And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised.”
Paul is telling the circumcision party that salvation by grace through faith has ALWAYS been the benchmark and that circumcision, baptism and the keeping of Torah are the result of faith being lived out in love to the Father!
12 And the law (Obedience to Torah as way of life handed down from parents) is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them.
Once one is convinced it is the only way to salvation, that is how he will live and in doing so he ignores the sacrifice of Yeshua – This is ‘pure’ Pharisaical Judaism.
The life lived according to Torah, as an obedience to YHVH, after recieving salvation in Yeshua, is the pathway to sanctification.
Leviticus 18:5 “Ye shall therefore keep my statutes, and my judgments: which if a man do, he shall live in them: I am the Lord.”
Ezekiel 20:11 “And I gave them my statutes, and shewed them my judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live* in them.”
H2425 חָיַי chayay (chaw-yah’-ee) v. to live, to revive. Rooted in H2421 חָיָה chayah (chaw-yaw’) v. to bring back to life from the dead.
Ephesians 2:8-10 “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
What are these good works that we are to walk/live out/example in them? It’s the Torah!
13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law (Law of sin equaling death), being made a curse for us [took the death sentence]: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
- Deuteronomy 21:22-23 “And if a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be to be put to death, and thou hang him on a tree: His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged is accursed of God;) that thy land be not defiled, which the Lord thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.”
- Hebrews 2:14 “Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death (physical sacrifice) he might destroy him that had the power of death (spiritual), that is, the devil.”)
14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on* the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
- Ezekiel 11:19-20 “And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh: That they may walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances, and do them: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God.”
- G1519 εἰς eis (eis) prep. To or into a purpose.
15 Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a man’s covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth (neutralize), or addeth thereto.
Paul is telling us there is no way we can delete the covenant [to man from] God nor can we add to the conditions that make the covenant relevant.
Ezekiel 36:22-27 “Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations to which you came. And I will vindicate the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, and which you have profaned among them. And the nations will know that I am the Lord, declares the Lord God, when through you I vindicate my holiness before their eyes. I will take you from the nations and gather you from all the countries and bring you into your own land. I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.”
16 Now to Abraham and his seed (offspring) were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. (the promise of salvation is not just to those that belong to the house of Abraham but to all that believe on the name of Yeshua/Jesus.)
17 And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.
- God made the covenant with Abraham long before the Mosaic Law and most assuredly a long, long time before Pharisees, how could either of them negate Gods promise? What is being explained here? The layering of the promises of Yah. He made a covenant or commitment to Adam, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, then to Moses and to the whole world in Yeshua.
- 2 Corinthians 1:20 “For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.”
18 For if the inheritance (adoption into family/House of Israel by faith) be of the law (tradition of keeping Torah), it is no more of promise (requires faith in YHVH): but God gave it to Abraham by promise.
19 Wherefore then serveth the law (tradition of keeping Torah)? It was added because of transgressions (moral violations), until the Seed (Yeshua) should come to whom the promise was made (the House of Israel); and it was ordained (foretold) by angels in the hand (power) of a mediator. (go-between/admin/savior)
20 Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one. (the go-between was for all people)
21 Is the law (Torah) then against the promises (faith in the message of salvation) of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law (any Law) given which could have given life (make people obey it), verily righteousness should have been by the law.
The Torah itself cannot make people adhere to its principles. Had the people followed the Torah there would have been no need for Yeshua.
Matthew 9:12 “But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.”
Romans 7:14-21 (ESV) “For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin. For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand.” Psalm 119:116 “Uphold me according unto thy word (Torah), that I may live: and let me not be ashamed of my hope.”
22 But the scripture (Holy writings/Torah) hath concluded (closed together) all under sin (disqualified for the prize), that the promise (announcement) by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.
- Romans 3:23 For all have sinned {broken Torah}, and come short of the glory of God” The debate at hand for many believers today is that we are not under the Torah/Law, but, under grace; how then could we, that have been born after Jesus, committed sin if there was no Law or instruction to spell out what is sin actually?
- 1 John 3:4 “Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.”
23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law (meaning your transgressions/sins are being held against you. Sin=death.), shut up unto (being held back) the faith (grace of YHVH to send a redeemer) which should afterwards be revealed.(Yeshua)
24 Wherefore the law (Torah) was our schoolmaster (instructor) to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified (salvation) by faith.
The whole goal of the Torah is to guide us to salvation in Yeshua.
The whole goal of the Holy Spirit is to guide us back to Torah.
25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.
Paul is telling us that once we have come to the Messiah for salvation we, [1] do not ignore the Torah, [2] we do not need to be shown our unrighteousness, [3] we have the word of YHWH and the faith that it is truth. You follow Torah in faith that it is YHWHs word, or better yet, his will.
Romans 3:31 “Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.”
Romans 6:1-2a “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin (transgression of the Torah), that grace may abound? God forbid.”
26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
(Being crucified in Christ means we have allowed the lawless flesh to die off and we are now living in the spirit that was created and came from YHWH. We desire to live in accordance to the instructions of the Creator.)
27 For as many of you as have been baptized (to overcome in thought or feeling) into Christ have put on Christ. (in the sense of sinking into a garment)
28 There is neither (separation because of ethnicity) Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free (those held to their heritage), there is neither male nor female (devalued people): for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
29 And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.
Genesis 17:10 “This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised.”
Paul just told them to get circumcised, to follow the Torah, as a result or evidence of their faith and not as an action to earn salvation. Remember we are talking about ALL the promises of Yah.
