In the verse prior to this Peter warns that there are many people that take Pauls writing out of context. Peter affirms the need for us to be deeply and fervently trained in the scriptures, which were, in his day, our current Old Testament. Lets read V.17 in the original Greek. Reminder: he is speaking to believers of Yeshua.

“You, accordingly, who knew beforehand, be on guard in order that you not lose, dont take off with those the wander off the path into lawlessness, losing your own ability to stand firm.”
