Philippians 1:19-29 …perseverance
For I know that this shall turn to my salvation (preservation from harm) through your prayer, and the supply (contribution) of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,
According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified (made great) in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.
For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. (Paul has dedicated his entire life to Jesus and at his death he will actually gain the spiritual presence of his Savior)
But if I live in the flesh (if they don’t kill me for the gospel), this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not. (no matter the outcome he will be happy with the end result)
For I am in a strait (preoccupied) betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: (he knows death will bring about Heaven)
Nevertheless to abide (remain) in the flesh is more needful for you. (the people will gain more knowledge and confidence in the faith should he be spared from conviction)
And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide and continue with you all for your furtherance and joy of faith;
That your rejoicing (boasting) may be more abundant in Jesus Christ for me by my coming to you again.
Only let your conversation (behave as a citizen) be as it becometh (appropriately) the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs (being in company with), that ye stand fast (preserve) in one spirit (vital principle), with one mind (passion of soul) striving together for the faith (firm persuasion) of the gospel;
And in nothing terrified by your adversaries (don’t be afraid of any that oppose you): which is to them an evident token of perdition (destruction, ruin or loss), but to you of salvation, and that of God. (There will be people telling you what you are doing for God is going to get you a heap of trouble)
For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake; (you are going to be ridiculed and pressured)
Matthew 10:22 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.
