Hebrews 4:12-16; 5:1-6 … our High Priest. part 1

Man O Man does the church love to quote this one…

Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God* is quick**, and powerful***, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

You cannot filter a thought through a nonexistent filter. If the Word of God is not in you, you cannot use it as a filter. Lets look at the words and what it is telling us…

  • *Torah … the written by God directly on Mt. Saini.
  • ** G2198 ζάω zao (zaō’) v. to live.
  • *** G1756 ἐνεργής energes (en-er-ǰees’) adj. active, operative.

Paul is telling us verbatim: Our decision making process is directly effected by our understanding and relationship to the Word/Torah. It is the instruction of the Holy Spirit that is our motivation, or our call to action, to be observant of these precepts.

  • John 10:16 “And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.”
  • John 10:27 “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:”
  • John 14:15″If ye love me, keep my commandments.”

Hebrews 4:13 “Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.”

Paul again touches on the divinity and the dominion of Jesus.

Hebrews 4:14-16 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”

  • Leviticus 6:9 “Command Aaron and his sons, saying, This is the law of the burnt offering: It is the burnt offering, because of the burning upon the altar all night unto the morning, and the fire of the altar shall be burning in it.”

Here is a huge sticking point for the religious folk. Why would we need a High Priest? What is the function of the High Priest? The religious folk want to explain away the High Priest function and say its the local preacher that is inferred here. Sorry that usurps the authority of Jesus role as High Priest.

Their job to offer up the sacrifice. As did Jesus. This is why Paul states later in this letter: Hebrews 10:10 “By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”

I am curious if the way the scribes chopped up these verses to fit into two different chapters plays into their confusion? it is clear to see the beginning of chapter five is a continuation of this significant need for a High Priest.

Hebrews 5:1-6 “For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins: Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity. And by reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins. And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron. So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee. As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

מַלְכִּי־צֶדֶק Malkiy-Tsedeq (mal-kee-tseh’-dek) n/p. king of righteousness.

Jesus Christ, the beginning and the end, is our High Priest and King of Righteousness. He will facilitate our Atonement as the Minister of the Heavenly Temple.

No one will escape the measure of the Torah. Adam and Eve realized they were naked, no longer covered by Gods protection, once they had sinned or violated the instructions. They hid themselves, as did David, and so will many of the men and women still alive at the return of Jesus. Why? they will know they have sinned against God and they do not want to be seen.

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.”
