The Mustard Seed
Matthew 17:20 “And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.”
The mustard seed, as many of us have been told, is the smallest of seeds. The part not generally related in this parable is the mustard plant is a water seeking plant with very deep and strong roots capable of moving large rocks underground.
The comparison many make are about the size of the plant above ground and its capability to provide shade and rest. The parts often missed (1) the plant has deep roots – for us that means a firm foundation in Jesus who is the Living Word (2) the roots seek water – for us again this is the Living water found in the saving grace of Jesus.
It is the access to salvation through grace and the devotion to the scriptures that give us the strength, not only to endure where we are planted, but to grow into a sanctuary for those traveling along the path.
