17 These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:
2 As thou hast given him power* over all flesh, that he should give eternal life** to as many as thou hast given him.
*G1849 ἐξουσία exousia (e-xou-siy’-a) n. authority, jurisdiction, liberty, privilege, permission, the right to do something.
** G2222 ζωή zoe (zō-ee’) n. life-above. (above or elevated in relation to the mere physical condition. There may be strong connotations and direct inferences to Spiritual, Kingdom, or Eternal life in certain contexts, but not always. This word deserves special demarcation and attention).
3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.
5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.
- John 1:1-3 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.”
- Ephesians 1:4 “God chose us in Christ to be holy and blameless in God’s presence before the creation of the world.”
6 I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.
7 Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee.
8 For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me*; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.
[This is Torah!]
9 I pray for them: I pray not for the world*, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.
G2889 κόσμος kosmos (koz’-mos) n. 1. orderly arrangement, i.e. decoration. 2. (by implication) the world including its inhabitants.
If you are looking for an incredible insight on this scripture…. I am fresh out! This appears, at first glance, that Jesus is not concerned about the world. I feel like it has everything to do with the physical appearance of the planet and not the inhabitants as we see a new and reformed planet in Revelation. Although we have several instances where the world (people) hate God and Jesus.
Romans 1:18-25 “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.”
10 And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.
11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.
12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name*: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.
G3686 ὄνομα onoma (o’-no-ma) n. a “name” (character). Webster defines character as; the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual. What were His distinctive qualities?
Hebrews 4:15 “For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.”
Being sinless had to be His most important character trait. What is sin?
1 John 3:4 “Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law (Torah): for sin is the transgression of the law (Torah).”
This should answer the question perfectly….Jesus’ moral qualities and mental aptitude would be the intentional life of Torah.
13 And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
- Malachi 2:6 “The law of truth was in his mouth, and iniquity was not found in his lips: he walked with me in peace and equity, and did turn many away from iniquity.”
14 I have given them thy word (Torah); and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.
{Jesus confirms NO RAPTURE}
16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word (Torah) is truth.
- Psalm 119:142 “Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and thy law (Torah) is the truth.”
- Romans 2:20 “An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law(Torah).”
18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.
19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified* through the truth**.
*G37 ἁγιάζω hagiazo (ha-ǰiy-a’-zō) v. to make holy, to set apart unto God and apart (alienate) from the world.
**remember what the truth is?
- Psalm 119:142 “Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and thy law (Torah) is the truth.”
- Romans 2:20 “An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law (Torah).”
20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;
21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:
23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.
This unity is not the kumbaya we see in the 501C3 …this is the unity of mind concerning the Torah…. Remember it’s His character!
24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.
25 O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.
26 And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.
- 1 John 5:2-4 “By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
