Digging deeper Genesis 1:3-5
3 And God said, Let there be* light**: and there was light.
*H1961 הָיָה hayah (haw-yaw) v. 1. to exist. 2. to be or become.3. to come into being, i.e. to happen, to occur
**The Hebrew word for “light” is “owr”. This word does not mean an object that emits light like the sun, moon or the stars, not even like a lamp. Rather it means to make luminous or better yet it is “kindled glorious”. When the Bible says God is light it says Elohim is “owr”. This word is closely associated with life and joy and goodness.
4 And God saw*** the light, that it was good****: and God divided the light from the darkness.
*** The word “saw” here is the combination of two words. H7200 רָאָה ra’ah (raw-aw’) v. (literally or figuratively) to see. Plus H853 אֵת ‘eth (ayth) prt-x.1. (properly) self. 2. (generally) used to point out the object of a verb (or preposition) more definitely. This meaning points us to the word ‘understand’. YHVH understood the light as being “good” or “tov”.
****The word “good” in Hebrew is “tov” and it does not simply mean “pleasant”. It means capable of, presently engaged in the process of, and destined for, completely fulfilling the Divine purpose for which it was created. Something “evil-ra” or wicked is something that stops something or someone from being able or capable of fulfilling their Divine purpose.
1 John 1:5-7 “This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth (torah): But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.”
John 1:1-5 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.”
Psalm 119:105 “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
Psalm 119:130 “The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.”
Using the references above from John and the Psalmist leads me to believe this is the creation of Yeshua Messiah to oppose the darkness that had presented itself in the Earth. When John tells us ‘the light shined in the darkness’ it is the literal existence of Yeshua, in human form, in the midst of the wicked.
5 And God called the light Day*, and the darkness** he called Night***. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
Now notice something strange: on the first day, God said He created light. Yet, it was on the fourth day that God created the Sun!
*H3117 יוֹם yowm (yome) n-m. 1. a day (as the warm hours). 2. from one sunset to the next. Additionally we see definitions of yowm to be “+ always, + elder, ever(-lasting, -more), life-full, + perpetually, +fullness.
**The Hebrew word for “darkness” here is “choshek”. In the Hebrew culture this word was more than the opposite of “owr” (the opposite of illumination). Choshek carries in it the sense of blindness, of misery, of falsehood and ignorance. It means something that leads to death and destruction. It is not a word that describes the natural, and good, phenomenon of nighttime.
***In Hebrew, night is H3915 לַיִל layil (lah’-yil) n-m. 1. (properly) a twist (away of the light), 2. (figuratively) adversity.
1 Thessalonians 5:4-5 “But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.”
Isaiah 27:1 “In that day the Lord with his hard and great and strong sword will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent, Leviathan the twisting serpent, and he will slay the dragon that is in the sea.”
Matthew 17:17 And Jesus answered, “O faithless and twisted generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you?” Acts 20:30 “and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them.”
2 Peter 3:15-16 “And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures.”
Evening is H6153 עֶרֶב `ereb (eh’-reɓ) n-m. dusk, and morning is H1242 בֹּקֶר boqer (bo’-ker) n-m. 1. (properly) dawn (as the break of day).
For me this confirms the light and dark are references to Yeshua and Satan as there are separate words for the passage of what we call days and nights.
