Romans 3:1-18 The non existent division

Romans 3:1-18 The non existent division

3:1 What advantage then hath the Jew? Or what profit is there of circumcision?

Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God.

Paul is saying here that the person who had committed their lives to following YHWH’s commands would be seen as righteous prior to the sacrifice of Jesus, and also afterward if they were doing it out of faith and love for YHWH and not as a tool for pride and accomplishment as in the eyes of the Scribes and Pharisees.

For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect?

Just because someone does not adhere to the Hebrew tradition of circumcision does not make null and void the promise of salvation from YHWH through Yahshua Messiah.

God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, that thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.

But if our unrighteousness commend the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unrighteous who taketh vengeance? (I speak as a man) (or sarcasm)

God forbid: for then how shall God judge the world?

For if the truth of God hath more abounded through my lie unto his glory; why yet am I also judged as a sinner?

And not rather, (as we be slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say,) Let us do evil, that good may come? whose damnation is just.

Paul is being accused of lying to the converts concerning the “law” of Judaism, to which, he is retorting with sarcasm. The “law” that this sect of Judaism refers includes all the oral traditions and the manmade Rabbinical rules created since Mt Sinai.

What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;

Despite any popular or cultural rulings the people of YHWH are still subject to the Torah and are completely incapable [in their own power as per the Fall] of fulfilling the instructions.

10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:

Isaiah 41:26 “Who hath declared from the beginning, that we may know? and before time, that we may say, He is righteous? yea, there is none that sheweth, yea, there is none that declareth, yea, there is none that heareth your words.”

11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.

12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together (both Jew and Gentile, as the Jews were denying the authority of Jesus as the Messiah and the Gentiles were denying the Torah as the instructions for properly following God) become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

13 Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips:

The asps represent the teachings of the polytheistic false religions and the influence it had on the Jews living in the Gentile world.

Psalm 5:8-10 “Lead me, O Lord, in thy righteousness because of mine enemies; make thy way straight before my face.  For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is very wickedness; their throat is an open sepulchre; they flatter with their tongue. Destroy thou them, O God; let them fall by their own counsels; cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions; for they have rebelled against thee.”

14 Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:

15 Their feet are swift to shed blood:

16 Destruction and misery are in their ways:

17 And the way of peace have they not known:

18 There is no fear of God before their eyes.

Deuteronomy 8:6 “Therefore thou shalt keep the commandments of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, and to fear him.”

Ecclesiastes 12:13 “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.”
